An American rapper will be allowed to perform in New Zealand despite having been charged with assault in Australia. Joey Bada$$ allegedly punched a security guard during an altercation at Byron Bay’s Falls Music Festival last Friday. According to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald the guard suffered facial injuries including a broken nose.

Real name Jo-Vaughn Jalani Virginie, the 19-year-old was arrested, charged, and called on to appear at Lismore Bail Court at the weekend. The rapper was released on bail and will appear on 19 March at Byron Bay Local Court.

Rachel Purdom, spokeswoman for Immigration New Zealand, confirmed that despite the charge Joey Badda$$ will not be refused entry to the country. She explained that even though the artist has been charged he does not have a criminal conviction that would mean the cancellation of his visa.

Odd Future, the LA rap group, was banned from entering New Zealand last February because the immigration authorities deemed them a public threat. The group was meant to be supporting Eminem at Western Springs.

According to Immigration NZ the decision was made in the interests of public safety because of incidences that had taken place in the past where the group appeared to have been inciting violence.
