New Zealand visas faked by Indian forgery gang
A fake visa and passport racket has been uncovered by authorities in India. New Zealand visas and passports were among the documents being faked and it is believed that they may have helped people enter the country illegally.
According to The Hindu newspaper other countries affected by the forgeries include Australia, Singapore, Canada, the US, and the UK. The report said two Sri Lankan nationals were at the centre of a thriving visa and passport racket operating over the last four years.
Police invaded the gang’s headquarters in Chennai where the discovered 110 passports and forged visa seals, according to the newspaper. Officials said that invalid passports were being acquired for around NZ$60 and fake visas were being printed into them.
The police also suggested that the forgers may have received help from immigration authority insiders.
New Zealand has also come under criticism from the US for being a destination country for foreign individuals sold into sex trafficking and forced labour. The US State Department has produced a report that accuses the New Zealand government of not doing enough to prosecute offenders. According to Immigration Minister Michael Woodhouse there is legislation in the pipeline that will make tackling the problem easier if cases of trafficking should arise.
