A new study has revealed that more women than men travel to New Zealand and while visiting spend more money in the country than their male counterparts. The Visa Global Travel intention survey indicates that 54 per cent of all those travelling to New Zealand are women.

Caroline Ada, New Zealand’s Visa Country Manager, said it was the women who tended to be in control of the purse strings when it came to travel and that New Zealand had a great opportunity to look at ways of marketing the country to female visitors.

She added that women tended to stay for longer periods than men. On average male visitors come for 10 days and female visitors come for 16 days, according to the survey. Women also appear to spend around $500 more than the men.

Researchers found that men spend around $3051 during their visit where women spend an average of $3683. Respondents admitted that most of their holiday cash went on eating, drinking and shopping. Food and drink accounted for 25 per cent of the spending and retail purchases a further 28 per cent.

The survey found spending for visitors is likely to increase by at least 50 per cent in the future. At the moment the average spend is $3271 per visit, but this is expected to rise to $4948.
