Chinese students refused entry to New Zealand

A number of Chinese nationals attempting to enter New Zealand on student visas have been turned away because of poor academic performance. Border staff at Auckland Airport reportedly denied entry to 14 students returning from China where they celebrated the Lunar New Year.

Of the 32 Chinese students who were stopped at immigration, several were put on flights back to China and one was denied entry because of his poor English language skills.

Another student from Prime International College was not allowed back into New Zealand because he had failed to make adequate academic progress in the school’s business studies programme.

A spokesperson for the college confirmed that a number of students had been turned back at immigration because of suspicions they were not genuine. Although Auckland immigration has not issued an official comment it is known that 35 Chinese nationals have been granted visas so that they can continue their education. Another 28 students are currently being investigated.

In 2011 random checks made at the Beijing office of New Zealand Immigration uncovered 300 bogus applications for student visas. The figures for last year are yet to be released.
