NZ initiative to make entry easier for foreign students

International students wanting to come to New Zealand to study can now enjoy having their applications processed faster, thanks to a joint initiative between Education New Zealand and Immigration New Zealand.

New Zealand education specialists, known as New Zealand Special Agents (NZSA), will now have a dedicated point of contact at Immigration, meaning those arranging their visas through them can have the whole thing done within 10 days.

The so-called Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) hopes to help the international education sector grow. The industry is currently worth around $2 billion to the New Zealand economy.

Steven Joyce, the country’s tertiary education, skills and employment minister, said the scheme is a great example of how government bodies can work together to make life easier for those wanting to study in NZ. He said growth can only come from great support and initiatives, adding that the government hopes to double the impact that the international education sector has on the economy within the next 15 years.

Nathan Guy, the NZ immigration minister, said it is key to make sure the 100,000 foreign students who come to the country each year are assisted with easy entry. He added that the NZSA programme will see Immigration New Zealand take up a greater role in the process.
