Courier service loses immigration documents
A woman whose passport and birth certificate were almost lost by a courier service after she sent them to New Zealand Immigration has spoken of the stress caused by the incident. Cheryl Gray, 30, was trying to renew her working visa when the important package was misplaced by CourierPost.
The shipping firm in fact only found the documents after its Avondale depot was subject to a frantic search in the middle of the night. Ms Gray, however, believes the situation may not have been resolved if she hadn’t contacted the New Zealand Herald newspaper as well as top managers at the company.
The firm’s online tracking system claimed that Ms Gary’s package had already arrived in Auckland, although New Zealand Immigration had no record of its arrival. When she then contacted CourierPost, she was told she would have a lodge a claim at immigration because the package had been lost.
Ms Gary, who works as a team manager at a call centre in Auckland, said she was concerned that she would become the victim of identity fraud as the courier company did not seem intent on looking for her documents. However, after she told managers that she had contacted the Herald, her package was found stuck to the bottom of a delivery bag in a night-time search.
A spokesman for CourierPost, which is owned by NZ Post and DHL, said the search began as soon as Ms Gray got in contact and that her decision to contact the newspaper did not influence their actions.
