New Zealand sees rise in skilled job vacancies
New figures released by New Zealand’s Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment show that the number of skilled job vacancies in the country has risen by 5.6 per cent. The rebuilding work taking place in Canterbury meant that the city recorded the highest rise in new jobs.
Demand for specialist skills saw the number of vacancies jump 36.5 per cent. Vacancies for skilled workers in the engineering and construction sector leapt 108.4 per cent and the number of tourism and hospitality jobs increased by 59.1 per cent.
Labour and Immigration Research Centre general manager, Vasantha Krishnan, said the ongoing rebuild projects in Canterbury were fuelling a demand for construction and engineering professionals.
Total job vacancies on the internet for the year ending in October were up by 15 per cent with 14.2 being for skilled workers.
Separately, the number of people visiting New Zealand appears to have dropped during October by 15 per cent. However, October 2011 saw a spike in the number of visitors because of the Rugby World Cup. According to Statistics New Zealand population statistics manager, Andrea Blackburn, the number of people coming into the country during October this year is similar to the same month in 2010. More people are coming in from Australia and China with the number of those coming from South Africa, France and the UK falling.
