Air New Zealand announces new cheap route to Australia
Air New Zealand has announced it will start a direct service to the Sunshine Coast from Auckland twice a week for only AUD$149, starting on July 1.
The deal has taken three years to come about, and will mean easier access to the area for the 80,000 to 100,000 New Zealand tourists who fly each winter. The airline will fly narrow-bodied aircrafts with 170 seats, reports the Sunshine Coast Daily.
Americans who wish to visit will also be able to book a flight direct to Maroochydore , with a stopover in Auckland. To prepare, Sunshine Coast Airport will create customs, immigration and quarantine services before the first flight lands.
Air New Zealand will see how much demand there is for direct flights before committing to a permanent service. The special fare of AUD$149 per person one-way is to celebrate the service, with the sale ending on March 2. A partnership with Virgin Australia allows passengers to book through either airline.
Acting Mayor Tim Dwyer said the news is “fantastic”, and that this announcement will move the Sunshine Coast from a regional economy to a major player on the world stage. He believes it means the area is entering a new chapter for economic activity and tourism.
