Parents of suicide girl seek boyfriends deportation
The parents of a teenager who committed suicide are fighting to guarantee the man convicted of an illegal relationship with her will be deported back to Samoa.
Hayley-Anne Fenton, 15, took her own life after receiving a text message she believed was sent to her by her "first love", Pelesasa Tiumalu, 27, who wrote, "Go Kill yourself, I don't care," reports the New Zealand Herald.
His wife, Elina, had found the messages from the teenager, and sent threatening and abusing messages in reply. While in hospital, her dad took the decision to turn off the life support machine.
Tiumalu was later convicted of sexual charges against an underage girl and spent four years three months in jail, which is an automatic deportation order. He has since appealed against being deported on humanitarian grounds as he has a wife and children in New Zealand.
Elina Tiumalu was charged with a good behaviour bond for nine months on charges of intimidation. Tiumalu recently sought an early release from the Parole Board, which was denied. Convener Judge Jane Lovell-Smith said that Tiumalu did nothing when his wife frightened Hayley-Anne. She added that this conduct made the board concerned that Tiumalu and his wife may be an undue risk to the community.
