New Zealanders struggle to spend time at home

A new report has revealed that well over half of New Zealanders who responded to an online survey claimed that the hours they are being made to work is having a detrimental effect on their family life. The study shows that many parents are missing out on dinner time and having to work at the weekends.

Of the 60 per cent of parents who admitted struggling to keep up with work 22 per cent they were finding it hard to manage their time and 37 per cent reported that they were just about able to cope. The study was commissioned by Hyundai. It found that among the main concerns of parents was finding an adequate amount of time to attend their children’s cultural and sporting events.

Others confessed that they were failing to get home for dinner on time and were often too tired after finishing work to play with their children. Nearly 30 per cent of respondents said they had to work at the weekend.

John Cowan, from The Parenting Place, said parents should try and use the same skills they use to manage their time at work to manage the time they are able to spend at home. He explained that technology is a great way to stay in touch with the kids when used properly.

He added that ring-fencing important events in the diary is also a way of guaranteeing that family time is protected.
