Changes due to take place at Immigration New Zealand have been outlined and they could include the closure of the Hamilton office. Two smaller branches at Dunedin and Sydney are expected to close before the end of next year. Nicola Hogg, general manager of Immigration New Zealand said the changes were part of a plan to introduce a global service delivery model.

Hogg said INZ would be looking at a further eight or 10 branches where changes could be made. However, the changes are likely to be phased in through 2014 1nd 2015 and no decisions have been finalised yet.

Hogg explained that if the Hamilton office did close its doors it would be replaced by a Visa Application Centre. The new centre would look after all the administrative duties relating to applications made by mail or in person. However any final decision concerning a visa application will still have to be passed by INZ.

Although some redundancies may be inevitable, Hogg said job losses would be kept to a minimum. She added that replacement jobs could be found in the Ministry of Business, Innovation and employment.

Hogg went on to say that 25 positions could be cut in the Visa Services division and 50 regional and branch manager positions could be lost. Jovi Abellanosa, relationships manager at the Hamilton Multicultural Services Trust said the changes were not a severe as the might at first sound.
