Economic refugees flooding from New Zealand to Australia

Statistics New Zealand has announced a huge exodus of its citizens, all heading to Australia to escape the country’s continuing economic crisis.

During the first six months of 2012 an amazing 53,900 New Zealanders crossed the Tasman Strait to settle in OZ, dwarfing the 9607 boat people who sought asylum in the country during the same period. The figures show a dramatic increase over last years’ totals, with the secretary of the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions, Peter Conway, confirming the economic refugee theory.

At present, NZ’s unemployment rate stands at 6.8 per cent, almost unchanged since the economic crisis, and wages give 20 per cent less purchasing power than the same wage in OZ. Conway blames the lack of government spending for the static unemployment statistics.

Australia has no control over migrants from New Zealand due to the Closer Economic Relations agreement between the two countries, and must accept permanent or long-term residents from its neighbour across the Tasman Strait. If the trend continues, over 100,000 NZ citizens will have arrived in Oz.

During the past year, New Zealand saw no net arrivals, with the 14,000 arriving from the UK and 14,000 from Australia mostly returning New Zealanders. Immigration minister Nathan Guy, when questioned by the media during his visit to Australia yesterday, said he doesn’t comment on migration from the country as his job is to concentrate on those coming in.
