The trend of New Zealanders moving to Australia for work has been highlighted by an overseas jobs expo in Auckland that attracted thousands over the weekend. The $15 dollar event was attended by around 6,000 Kiwis, keen to cash in on the skills shortage and tax breaks across the Tasman.

The Oz Jobs Expo has hosted two similar events in the past year and a half, with all being well attended. According to director Jason Clayton, those coming for a look this week were well suited to the employers attending.

The New Zealand Herald reports that 53,000 New Zealanders (a record number) moved to Australia last year. However, this number is expected to rise even further thanks to Australia’s benefits and tax breaks.

Employers at the expo were looking for IT specialists, mining engineers, hotel managers and mechanical fitters, among other skilled jobs, with all reporting that they were impressed by the potential they saw in New Zealand. In total, more than 400,000 Kiwis are now living in Australia.

According to Paul Spoonley, an immigration commentator, New Zealanders are keen to leave their homeland as they feel the government offers little in the way of job opportunities, wages and tax breaks. Thanks to money made from Australia’s tax boom, the government has trebled the tax-free threshold from $6,000 to 18,200, meaning a million more people will have nothing at all to pay.
